The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game played by two or more players. It is a game of strategy, mental toughness, attrition and luck. The highest-ranking hand wins the pot. The best hand is a Royal Flush (Jack-Queen-King-Ace of the same suit). Other possible hands include Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Three of a Kind, Two Pairs, and High Card.

In each round of betting, each player has the option to call, raise or fold. If you raise, you must put up the amount of money that the player before you called, or more if you have a better hand. If you fold, you are out of the hand and do not have to put any more money into the pot.

After all players have acted, the dealer deals the remaining community cards face up in three stages, known as the flop, turn and river. The last card dealt is the river, and it’s time for the fourth and final round of betting.

When all the players reveal their cards, whoever has the strongest hand takes the winnings – the sum total of the bets made by other players, plus the original stake that was placed in the pot. In the event of a tie, the winnings are split between the players.
